Upon arrival, you will be met by Adventure Birding Tours guide who will welcome you at Kotoka International Airport and transport you to a bird friend hotel for a good night rest and prepare for your 21 Days - 20 Nights Bird and Wildlife Photography excursion in Ghana.

Day 2….. Shai Hills Reserve – Muni Lagoon – Winneba Plains. Birding on route



Your birding excursion in Ghana will kick start today in the morning with a visit to the open grassland savannah of Shai Hills, hoping to see and photograph some good savannah birds and birds that are associated with this site like White Crowned Cliff Chat, Stone Partridge, Blue Bellied Roller, Purple Roller, Violet Turaco, Senegal Parrot, Swallow Tailed Bee-eater, Red Necked Buzzard, Oriole Warbler, Long Crested Eagle, Black Bellied Bustard, Temminck’s Courser, Red Shouldered Cuckooshrike, Whinchat, Flappet Lark, African Crake, Ahanta Francolin, Blue Bellied Roller, Black Bellied Bustard, Swallow Tailed Bee-eater, Long Crested Eagle, Red Necked Buzzard, Winchat, Flapped Lark, Rock Martin, Ovambo Sparrowhawk, Croaking Cisticola.

Day 3 – 5….. Kakum National Park (Canopy walkway), Abrafo Forest, Antwikwaa Forest and surroundings. Birding the area.



After an early breakfast you will set off for the Worlds Famous Canopy Walkway at Kakum National Park which is the leading destination for bird watching in Ghana. A wonderful World of amazing canopy species awaits you out there. You hope to get there early hours to see the first light and record the first species that will fry out.

You aim to get there early morning to spend the most critical bird viewing hours on the canopy walkway trying to see and photograph many mouth-watering species like Black Dwarf Hornbill, Violet Backed Hyliota, White Crested Hornbill, Congo Serpent Eagle, CassinS Hawk Eagle, Long Tailed Hawk, Brown Cheeked Hornbill, Red Cheeked Wattle Eye, Tit Hylia, African Piculet, Forest Wood Hoopoe, Black Casqued Hornbill, Red Tailed Bristlebill, Green Tailed Bristlebill, Western Bearded Greenbul, Brown and Puvels Illadopsis, Buff Throated, Johannas, Tiny and Olive Bellied Sunbird.

Day 6….. Nsuta Reserved Forest. Birding on route.



An excellent secondary semi deciduous forest that protects a plethora of quality species that will enhance our list and overall experience. Species we hope to see and photograph here includes Red Billed Helmetshrike, Dwarf Bittern, Bristle Nosed Barbet, White Crested Bittern, Spot Breasted Ibis, Western Bronze Napped Pigeon, Afep Pigeon, Purple Throated Cuckooshrike, Spotted Honeyguide, Black Collared Lovebird, Brown Necked Parrot, Red Tailed Greenbul, Black Dwarf Hornbill, African Piculet, Naked Faced Barbet, Kemp`s Longbill and Black Bee-eater.

You will be driven to an excellent forest for about an hour drive from your guesthouse. This secondary semi-deciduous forest protects a plethora of quality species that will enhance your list and overall experience. Species that you may hope to see and photograph here includes red-billed helmetshrike, dwarf bittern, bristle-nosed barbet, white-crested bittern, spot-breasted ibis, western bronze-napped pigeon, Afep pigeon, Bates’s swift, blue-headed coucal, pale-breasted illadopsis, white-tailed rufous thrush, white-headed wood hoopoe, African wood owl, yellow-bearded greenbul, bat hawk, narrow-tailed starling, Bates’s sunbird, and blackcap illadopsis.

Day 7 – 8….. Ankasa Forest. Birding the area.


The key target for the day is Nkulengu Rail, you will be going all out to locate this rare species in the early morning hours.

You will be searching for many Upper Guinea Endemics such as Hartlaubs duck, White breasted guineafowl, Yellow casqued hornbill, African finfoot, Shining blue kingfisher, White bellied kingfisher, Cassins flycatcher, Red billed dwarf hornbill, Olive long tailed and Dusky long tailed cuckoo, Great blue turaco, White throated greenbul, Rufous winged illadopsis, Rufous sided broadbill, Shining drongo, Forest robin, Red fronted antpecker, Reichenbachs sunbird, White browed forest flycatcher, Red chested owlet, Common cuckoo, Grey throated rail, Orage weaver, Narinas trogon, Yellow billed turaco, White tailed alethe, Western black headed and Black winged oriole Swamp greenbul, Green headed sunbird.

Day 9….. Ankasa Forest – Brenu Beach Road. Birding on route.



You will enjoy a final morning of birding at this wonderful location. You will be targeting species you may have missed or would like to get better quality images. After a full morning of birding, you will return to the lodge or camping site to arrange your bags and enjoy lunch before heading back towards Cape Coast. Species like Yellow billed turaco, Little and Little Grey Greenbul, Cassin`s and Sabine`s Spinetail, White Spotted Flufftail, Marsh Tchagra, Red Winged Prinia, African Pygmy, Chocolate Backed, White Bellied, African Dwarf and Giant Kingfishers will awaits you.

Day 10….. Kakum Forest – Rock Pratincole Site – Picathrates Site. Birding the area.



The big day is today. You will be visiting the Yellow Headed Picathartes (White Necked Rockfowl) nesting site for the most sought-after bird in West Africa, please make sure that you have enough memory card.

You will check out of your hotel after an early breakfast, and drive to a remote village where the famous species and pre-historic bird (Yellow Headed Picathartes) will follow with much excitement.

It is hard to contain your excitement as these legendary prehistoric looking birds hop and jump on the rocks whilst preening themselves just meters from your eyes giving photographers among you a busy time of the day. You will then continue your journey to Kumasi, after you have fully enjoyed the target bird for the day.

Day 11….. Opuro Forest – Mole National Park. Birding on route.



You will be scanning Opuro Forest for many species that you have missed out in other areas including Fiery Breasted Bushshrike, one of the most sought-after birds in Ghana, Superb Sunbird, Lesser Morehen, Grey Headed Bristlebill, Black Sparrowhawk, Northern Puffback, Hamerkop just to mention few.
You will then find our way to Ghana`s Premier Wildlife National Park, Mole National Park after an incredible morning for this extraordinal bird.
Species expected to see here includes Wire Tailed Swallow, Red Chested Swallow, African Moustached Warbler, Rufous Cisticola, Grey Rumped Swallow, Chestnut Backed Sparrow Lark, Red Billed Firefinch, White Headed Lapwing, White Helmetshrike, African Golden Oriole, Purple And Blue Bellied Roller, Lesser Blue Eared Starling, Gabar and Dark Chanting Goshawk, Purple Starling, Abyssinian Roller, Black Faced Quailfinch, Mosque Swallow, Yellow Billed Kite and more will be captured today.

Day 12-13….. Mole National Park. Birding the area.



After an early breakfast you set off for an interesting forest in a transitional zone between the Southern wetter forest and Northern drier woodland habitats where you will find some quality species. It will be one of the difficult birding sorties you may take in this tour, but you will be happy with the walk when you get to see many regional specialties within close ranges and get clean photographs.

Day 14….. Mole NP – Tongo Hills – Bolgatanga. Birding on route.



You shall depart from Mole for Bolgatanga today, Along the way we will visit Tongo Hill to add some special species associated to this site like Fox kestrel, Rock loving cisticola, African silverbill, Booted eagle, Red necked falcon, Black headed weaver, Montagus harrier, Painted snipe, Viteline masked weaver, Common snipe, Village indigobird, Red winged pytilia, Red billed firefinch, Red cheeked cordonblue including others to our list before we get to Bolga.

Day 15….. Tono Dam – White Volta. Birding the area.



After early breakfast we set off to Tono dam where we will see and photograph species like Africn morning dove, Black bellied bustar, Spur winged goose, Knob billed duck, Chestnut bellied starling, Yellow pendiline tit, Speckled fronted weaver, Standard winged nightjah, White Helmetshrike, Sulphur breasted bush shrike, Matial eagle, Long crested eagle, White fronted black chat, Denhams bustard, Northern carmine bee-eater, Woodchat shrike, African fish eagle, Black faced quailfinch, Garbar goshawk, Four banded sandgrouse and many more will be seen.

After an incredible morning birding we will return back to Bolgatanga for our delicious lunch and make our way to Egyptian plover site for our second target of the trip and more other species like White billed buffalo weaver, White headed lapwing, Speckled pigeon, Greater blue eared starling, Bronze tailed starling, Green bee eater, Red chested swallow among other good species around.

After breakfast you shall depart Bolgatanga for Kumasi stopping at Nsai Wetland to add some incredible species to our list before we make our way to Kumasi.

Day 17….. Bobiri Forest & Butterfly Sanctuary. Birding the area.

This morning we hope to see Tit hylia, Green Hylias, Magpie Mannakin, Narina’s Trogon, Red billed Dwarf and Black Dwarf Hornbills, African Grey and Red fronted Parrots, Purple-throated Cuckooshrike, Blue moustached bee-eater, Black bee-eater, Black throated Coucal, Golden backed Weaver, Dusky crested flycatcher, Yellow throated cuckoo, Green crombec, Kemps and Grey longbill, Frsers sunbird, Western olive sunbird, Swamp greenbul, Western bluebill, Black and white mannikin, Orange cheeked waxbill, Black winged bishop, Copper tailed glossy starling.

You will also see Chestnut winged starling, Black winged oriole, Western black headed oriole, Sooty boubou, Sabine`s puffback, Collared sunbird, Blue throated brown sunbird, Green sunbird, Little green sunbird, Forest pendurine tit, West African wattle eye, Shrike, Chesnut capped flycatcher, Yellow browed and Olive green camaroptera, Blue headed Crested Flycatcher, Yellow-billed Barbet, Grey headed and Red tailed Bristlebills and the much sought after Yellow footed Honeyguide , Black necked, Maxwells Black, Compact and Grosbeak Weavers, Whistling Cisticola, Black crowned and Marsh Tchagra, African Emerald cuckoo, Klaas’s, Levaillants , Yellow throated and Didric Cuckoo, Red bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Western Bluebill, Tessmann’s Flycatcher and if we are lucky Baumann’s Greenbul will be seen.

Day 20….. Kalakpa Reserve Forest. Birding the area.



Another good spot in Ghana where a lot of species can be observed like Capuchin babbler, Red cheeked wattle eye, Shinning blue kingfisher, Thick billed cockoo, Blue shoulded robinchat, African moustached wabler, Black shoulded nightjah, Brown necked parrot, Green wood hoopoe, Fine spotted woodpecker, Striped kingfisher, White throated francolin, African golden oriole, Blue bellied roller, Double spurred francolin, Baumann`s greenbul, White throated greenbul, European bee-eater, Splendid sunbird, Copper sunbird, Great spotted cuckoo, Guinea turaco, Violet turaco just to mention few.

Day 21 Keta Lagoon – To Accra – To The Airport.


This is an oustanding site where we will see both Residential and Migratory shore birds like Kittlitz`s plover, African spoonebill, Glossy ibis, Purple swamphen, Black heron, Squaco heron, Purple heron, Green backed heron, Grey heron, Great egret, Intermediate egret, Cattle eagret, Little egret, African wattled lapwing, Spur winged lapwing, Whimbrel, Royal tern, Common tern, Little tern, Sandwich tern, Black tern, Gull billed tern, Zitting cisticola, Winding cisticola, Great swamp warbler, Red knot, Ruff, Sanderling, Ruddy turnstoe, Common redshank, Common Greenshank, Yellow crowned bishop, Yellow throated longclow, Northern pintail, White faced whistling duck, Black winged stilt, Pied avocet, Western marsh harrier, Yellow billed kite, Common sandpiper, Wood sandpiper, Marsh sandpiper, Green sandpiper, Collared platincole, Yellow billed shrike, Eurasian oystercatcher, America golden plover, Little grebe, Long tailed cormorant, Little stint, Kentish plover and more.

After an incredible day at Keta Lagoon we will head to the hotel to have a shower and enjoy some nice meal before later making our way to the Airport to say good bye to Ghana.
