Birdwatching Sites in Ghana.

Kakum National Park (Canopy Walkway).

Kakum National Park is Located 30km north of the seaside town of Cape Coast in Ghana’s Central Region, Kakum National Park and the adjacent Assin Attandaso Resource Reserve cover approximately 365 square kilometers of semi deciduous secondary Upper Guinea Rainforest with its main attraction being the world famous Canopy Walkway.

 
The canopy walkway offers Birders an excellent opportunity to see the more difficult canopy dwelling species at close quarters.


Upper Guinea Endemics like Brown Cheeked Hornbill, Sharpe’s Apalis and Copper Tailed Glossy Starlings are common here in addition to Black and Yellow Casqued Hornbills.

 
Kakums forest trails offer more difficult to see understory species like White Throated, Western Bearded and Red Tailed Greenbuls, Fire crested Alethe, Finch’s Flycatcher thrush, West African
Forest Robin, Rufous Sided Broadbill, Red Billed Helmitshrike, Red Tailed Bristlebill, Chocolate Backed Kingfisher and the Upper Guinea Endemic Green Tailed Bristlebil, Owl’s and Nightjahs are also common with Frasers Eagle and African Wood Owl’s in good numbers and much sought-after Brown Nightjar.

Mole National Park.

Mole National Park is Ghana’s premier wildlife viewing protected area covering 4847 square kilometers and protecting over 90 mammal and 330 Bird species.

The Yellow Headed Picathartes (White Necked Rockfowl) is the most sought-after species found in the Tropical Rain-forests of west Africa, Ghana.
The famous species and pre-historic bird Picathartes will be found in a remote village between Cape Coast and Humasi.
It is hard to control your excitement as these legendary prehistoric looking birds hop and jump on the rocks whilst preening themselves just meters from your eyes giving photographers amongst you a busy moment.

Ankasa Rain Forest.

Ghana’s most exciting Birdwatching Destinations, the Ankasa protected area comprises the continuous Nini-sahien National Park and Ankasa Resource Reserve, which together form a highly accessible and well preserved 509km2 chunk of wet evergreen Upper Guinea Rainforest.

 
Ankasa is one of the most biologically rich habitats in Africa and believed to protect Ghana’s only remaining population of Chimpanzee.

 
Forest Elephant, Bongo and many other mammal species can be found here. Star Birds are definitely the Upper Guinea Endemic’s White Breasted Guineafowl, Yellow Bearded Greenbul, Green Tailed Bristlebil and Rufous Winged Illadopsis in addition to more gem’s like Africa’s rarest Kingfisher the White Bellied and Shining Blue, Yellow Casqued Hornbill, Great Blue Turaco, Hartlaub`s Duck, African Finfoot, White Crested Tiger Heron and Dwarf Bittern are there to wet the appetite.

 
Ankasa Reserve can be found 21km east of the border town with the Ivory Coast along the main Takoradi-Elubo road.

Atewa Range Forest Reserve.

Atewa range is an amazing Upper Guinea Rainforest that provides many different diversity and a home to many species of Birds like Blue moustached bee-eater, Red chested cuckoo, Yellow throated cuckoo, Dusky crested frycatcher, Narinas trogon, Yellow billed turaco, Copper tailed starling, Chestnut winged starling, Green twinspot, Red fronted antpecker, Yellow spotted barbet and Grosbeak weaver.


Also discover Chocolate backed kingfisher, Crowned eagle, Brown cheeked hornbill, Olive long tailed, Black, African emerald, Klaass and Didric cuckoos, Green tailed, Red tailed and Grey headed bristlebill, Baumans, Ansorges, Litle grey, Western bearded, Golden, Slender billed, Little and Yellow bearded greenbuls.


As well as Western nicator, Swamp greenbul, Common bulbul, Puvels, Blackcap, Brown, Pale and Rufous winged illadopsis, sort after Long tailed hawk, Congo serpent eagle, African cuckoo hawk, Yellow footed honeyguide, Black bellied seedcracker, Red cheeked wattle and Chestnut wattle eye including many more will be seen.

Bobiri Forest Reserve & Butterfly Sanctuary.

Bobiri Forest Reserve sanctuary protects almost 500 species of Butterfly but is also a treasure trove of Birds and one of the best locations to see the awesome Long Tailed Hawk much sought after by world Birders.

 
Additional species include Lathams Francolin, Black Throated Coucal, Tit Hylia, Brown Illadopsis, Red billed Helmetshrike, Velvet mantled Drongo, Red bellied Paradise Flycatcher, Black and Red chested Cuckoos, Western Nicator, Swamp Palm Greenbul, Black and White Flycatcher, Grey and Red fronted Parrots, Finch’s Flycatcher thrush and Blue throated Roller. Also findOlive bellied and Green headed Sunbirds, white crested and Red billed dwarf hornbills in addition to Africa’s rarest the Black Dwarf Hornbill.

 
Bobiri is one of the only remaining Upper Guinea Rainforest’s close to the bustling city of Kumasi in the Ashanti Region of Ghana.

 
There is basic accommodation here with no electricity and Bobiri is found 30km South of Kumasi on the main Accra-Kumasi road.

Shai Hills Wildlife Reserve .

Shai Hills Reserve is the closest wildlife protected area to Accra with a savannah grassland habitat, large rock formations and caves.

 
The rock formations provide good numbers of White Crowned Cliff Chat and Rock Martins in addition to Rock Loving Cisticolas. Guinea and Violet Turacos are common as are Puvels Illadopsis, Blue Bellied, Broad billed and Rufous Crowned Rollers, Senegal Parrot, Red Headed Lovebird, Black Cap and Brown Babblers.


In addition you will find Stone Partridge, Grey Hornbill, Fork tailed Drongo, White crowned Robin Chat, Croaking Cisticola, Grey Kestrel, Rosy and Swallow tailed Bee-eaters and Rose ringed Parakeets.

 
African Hobby is regularly seen and large numbers of Olive Baboons greet you on your arrival to the park.

Nsuta Reserve Forest.

An excellent secondary semi deciduous forest that protects a plethora of quality species that will enhance our list and overall experience.

Keta Lagoon.

Keta lagoon is the largest lagoon in Ghana, separated from the ocean by a long sandbar.
This Ramsar site is Ghana`s most important marine birding site and its tiny Islands sites for special attraction.
You can canoe on the lagoon or use the bird watching lookout at Woe. Apart from the thousand migration shore birds, this area provide plenty of sites for you to explore, like Mangrove forest of Avu, Breading grounds of Sea Turtle, Lovely Beaches, Fort Pridzenstein and the Cape ST Paul Lighthouse which will add more salt to your visit to Keta.

Sakumono Lagoon.

This is an outstanding site located Accra Ghana where you will see both Residential and Migratory shore birds like Kittlitz`s plover, African spoonebill, Glossy ibis, Purple swamphen, Black heron,Squaco heron, Purple heron, Green backed heron, Grey heron, Great egret, Intermediate egret, Cattle eagret and Little egret.


You will also see African wattled lapwing, Spur winged lapwing, Wimbrel, Royal tern, Common tern, Little tern, Sandwich tern, Black tern, Gull billed tern, Zitting cisticola, Winding cisticola, Great swamp warbler, Red knot, Ruff, Sanderling, Ruddy turnstoe, Common redshank, Common Greenshank, Yellow crowned bishop, Yellow throated longclow, Northern pintail and White faced whistling duck.


Black winged stilt, Pied avocet, Western marsh harrier, Yellow billed kite, Common sandpiper, Wood sandpiper, Marsh sandpiper, Green sandpiper, Collared platincole, Yellow billed shrike, Eurasian oystercatcher, America golden plover, Little grebe, Long tailed cormorant, Little stint, Kentish plover and more will be available.

Bui National Park.

Bui National Park stretches an area of 1821 square kilometers and protects Ghana’s largest population of hippopotamus.
A hydro-electric dam is currently being built at Bui and will eventually cover more than 50% of this exceptional wildlife habitat of guinea woodland and savannah.
An abundance of mammal and bird species have been recorded that are now under threat due to the dam project.

Bia National Park.

Bia National Park is in the Western Region of Ghana. It’s also a biosphere reserve with a 563 square kilometer resource reserve.

 
It has some of the Ghana’s last remnants of relatively untouched forest with its full diversity of wildlife some of the tallest trees left in the West Africa are found in this National Park. There are 62 species of mammals, including 10 primate species known to live in the Park, and over 189 species of birds have been recorded, including the endangered White breasted Guineafowl, Black Collared lovebird, Cassin’s hawk Eagle, Honeyguide Greenbul, Black headed Oriole, Brown and Puvel’s illadopsis, finch’s flycatcher thrush.

 
Grey Headed Nigrita, Western Nicator, spotted Greenbul, Grey headed bristlebill, Fire bellied woodpecker, melancholy woodpecker and many others can be found here.

Owabi Forest & Wildlife Reserve.

This incredible Forest Reserve and Bird Sanctuary is located not far from Kumasi, a secondary forest that surrounds the Owabi Water Reservoir.
This site is the only Ghana`s inland Ramsar site and contains a great variety of Birdlife and outstanding forest walk.
Its an ideal place for Winter Migration Shore Birds as well as some Residential Shore Birds. A large number of Monkeys, Antelopes and Mongoose are also present to wet the appetite.

 

Tono Dam – White Volta.

Far North of the country we will look for some really special species, including the splendid Egyptian Plover, Standard Winged Nightjah, Four Banded Sandgrouse, Zebra Waxbill, Northern Carmine Bee-eater, White Headed and Black Heade Lapwings which are the World’s most sought-after birds.

Kalakpa Reserve Forest.

Kalakpa forest situated in the Volta Region of Ghana and contains Capuchin babbler, Striped kingfisher, Moustached grass warbler, Thick billed cuckoo, White throated francolin, Brown necked parrot, Red cheeked wattle eye, Bauman`s greenbul, White throated greenbul, Purple roller, Splendid sunbird, Black shoulded nightjah including others will be seen here as well as other centers will be visited for other great number of bird species.
